Abstract: Venous thromboembolic disease is a very common complication in the ICU. This article reviews incidence, prevention, and therapy related to venous thromboembolism, including both deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Special diagnostic and treatment considerations in the ICU setting are highlighted. The increased use of antithrombotic agents has led to an increased number of patients who experience bleeding complications on anticoagulant therapy.
