  • Title: [Advances in researches for protection and induction of cytokines to retinal neurons].
    Author: Zheng H, Li GL.
Journal: Zhonghua Yan Ke Za Zhi; 2005 Sep; 41(9):861-4. PubMed ID: 16191359.
    Abstract:
The role of cytokines in retinal functional reconstruction has been studied extensively. It has been found that brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and neurotrophin-4 (NT-4) can not only prevent retinal photoreceptor cells (RPCs) from degeneration and improve RPCs recovery after being damaged, but also promote growth and development of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and stimulate regeneration of axons of RGCs. Furthermore, it has been found that lens epithelium-derived growth factor (LEDGF) and human amniotic epithelial cells (HAECs) both have effects of protection on RGCs, but the role of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) in retina will be studied in the future.
