    Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the mortality of the hospitalized patients is associated with the day of the week on which they are admitted to intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: The clinical data of 1840 patients admitted to the ICU of Peking Union Medical College Hospital from 26 June 1999 to 20 December 2002 were analyzed to compare the mortality rates of those admitted on the weekdays and that of those admitted at weekend with APACHE II and multiple factors as weights. RESULTS: Before adjustment and after adjustment according to the APACHE II diagnostic classification weight, the hospital mortality rates of the patients admitted to the ICU on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were all significantly higher than those on Thursday. However, after adjustment by multiple factors, the hospital mortality rates of the patients admitted to the ICU on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were not significantly different from one another. CONCLUSION: The hospital mortality is not associated with the day of week of ICU admission.
