Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases include hypertension, coronary heart disease, acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, sudden death, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke. The high risk of cardiovascular disease in individuals with diabetes was recognized more than 30 years ago. Appreciation of the multiple risk factors and complex pathophysiologic process responsible for cardiovascular disease in individuals with both type 1 and 2 diabetes is critical for the prevention, early detection, and management of cardiovascular disease in this population.
