Title: [Dysentery in Poland in 2004]. Author: Stypułkowska-Misiurewicz H. Journal: Przegl Epidemiol; 2006; 60(3):441-8. PubMed ID: 17249165. Abstract: The number of notified dysentery cases is the lowest of all years since 1918 when notification started. Only 74 cases were notified in the year 2004 (incidence rate 0.19/100,000 population) while 220 cases were registered in 2002 (incidence 0.58/100,000 population). No one death case was notified. The last three death cases were notified in 1999. Two dysentery outbreaks (due to S. flexneri 3A): were notified when the outbreaks of food poisoning were examined by regional laboratory of Sanitary-Epidemiological Station; one involving 10 person in one beggars family, one, institutional, involving 8 residents in Social Care Home These two outbreaks and also 3 family outbreaks in other region were due to S. flexneri 3A. All were detected by the active investigation performed by Sanitary Service staff. All together the 5 outbreaks were involving 39 persons, while 35 sporadic cases were dispersed in 8 voivodships. No one dysentery case were notified in young children in towns. S. flexneri infections in 46% all persons examined were dominating in persons of contacts and carriers but S. sonnei in 42% of all persons positive, were dominating in patients. S. dysenteriae 3 was found in 1 and Shigella sp. in 3 patients, S. boydii infections were not found. Among 33 dysentery cases: S. sonnei dominated in 51% of cases, S. flexneri was the next 37% of cases, 12% were due toShigella sp. not defined exactly. Such structure of etiology is indicating that only in few cases among children and young persons were diagnosed. In the period of low frequency of Shigella infections the external control of the quality of bacteriological media, laboratory and prae-laboratory procedures should be regularly controlled.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
