    Abstract:
Johannes Zeeman (1824-1905) was a physician in the service of the city of Amsterdam, a hygienist and a pioneer of medical-statistical research in the Netherlands. He contributed substantially to a modern and nationally standardised registration of disease and mortality. He acted as the second editor-in-chief to the Nederlandsch Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde (Dutch Journal of Medicine) for 18 years (1866-1884) and likely laid the foundation for the establishment of the Dutch Journal of Medicine Society, which later became the journal's proprietor.
