Abstract: Patients can be infected with hepatitis B or C or HIV as a result of exposure to blood of infected health professionals, especially surgeons. This article reviews the literatureon single and multiple cases of such infections. Risk factors for exposure and for infection are summarised. The probability of infection after a single exposure is reviewed. Standard recommendations for prevention on infection from health controversy and this also considered.
