Title: [Local treatment for persistent inflammatory arthritis of the knee: intra-articular injection of glucocorticoids and bed rest]. Author: Bijlsma JW, Saris DB, Jahangier ZN. Journal: Ned Tijdschr Geneeskd; 2008 Sep 06; 152(36):1956-8. PubMed ID: 18807330. Abstract: Two studies evaluating treatment options for persistent mono-arthritis are discussed. In one study arthroscopic lavage plus intra-articular glucocorticoids was compared with arthroscopic lavage without glucocorticoids, and with joint aspiration plus glucocorticoids. Both intra-articular glucocorticoids and lavage have their merits, but glucocorticoids appear to be slightly more effective. In the second study radioactive Yttrium plus intra-articular glucocorticoids was compared with glucocorticoids alone. Yttrium provided little additional value. There are some indications that a period of strict bed rest after treatment is beneficial. Intra-articular glucocorticoids should not be administered more frequently than three times per year in the same joint.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
