Title: [Odynophagia as an initial presentation of eosinophilic esophagitis]. Author: Cedrón Cheng H, Tagle Arróspide M, Scavino Levy Y. Journal: Rev Gastroenterol Peru; 2008; 28(3):270-3. PubMed ID: 18958144. Abstract: Over the last years, eosinophilic esophagitis is an increasingly recognized disease both in children and adults. The clinical presentation includes more frequently dysphagia and esophageal food impactation and rarely odynophagia. Endoscopic appearance is variable from almost normal mucosa (only mucosal fragility or oedema) to the typical rings or corrugated esophagus. Diagnosis is established from biopsies showing the presence of more than 20 eosinophils per high powered field in esophageal squamous mucosa. Up to date, ingestion of topical corticosteroids is the most common treatment regimen. This is the first documented case of eosinophilic esophagitis in the Peruvian medical literature.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
