    Biotechnology has provided valuable methods for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of disease, together with possibilities for greater understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms. The ethical problems inherent in the use of DNA technology in diagnostics are complex and pertain not only to the patient but also in large measure to the family, the physician, and public and private bodies. Information is still lacking as regards the long-term psychological and social consequences which these investigations may entail.
