    Abstract:
    The contact lens is still the most frequently used visual aid applied directly to the eye to correct refractive errors. The most important refractive indications and the advantages and drawbacks of the major lens types are discussed. Toric, bifocal and disposable lenses are also presented. The development of new, highly gas-permeable rigid materials are considered.
