  • Title: Sexually transmitted diseases and the primary care provider.
    Author: Rosenberg MJ.
Journal: Prim Care; 1990 Mar; 17(1):195-203. PubMed ID: 2181510.
    Abstract:
Although primary care physicians provide traditional diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up to patients with sexually transmitted diseases, their role in prevention efforts is becoming increasingly important. This reflects a younger patient group, often otherwise healthy patients who consult for contraception, as well as recognizing the trust and respect that comes from long-term patient relationships. Both provide primary care physicians with the opportunity for effectively conveying prevention messages. From the perspective of the primary care provider, this article reviews the importance of awareness of STD, timely information, and steps for effectively dealing with a common and growing medical challenge.
