Journal: Przegl Epidemiol; 2011; 65(2):301-5. PubMed ID: 21913480.
    Abstract:
8236 TB cases were reported in Poland in 2009. The incidence rate was 21.6 cases per 100 000, with large variability between voivodeships from 13.6 in the west to 34.3 in the east of the country. The mean annual decrease of TB incidence in 2000-2009 was 2.7%. 7261 cases had no history of previous treatment i.e. 19.0 per 100.000. The number of all notified pulmonary tuberculosis cases was 7654 i.e. 20.1 per 100.000. The proportion of extrapulmonary tuberculosis was 7.1% (582 cases). TB was diagnosed in 99 children (1.2% of all cases). The incidence of tuberculosis increased with age to 39.9 among patients 65 years old and older. The median age group was 50-54 years. The incidence among men i.e. 30.1 was more than two times higher than among women i.e. 13.6. The incidence in rural population was little higher than in urban, respectively 21.7 and 21.5. Bacteriologically confirmed cases (5035) constituted 65.8% of all pulmonary TB cases. The number of smear positive pulmonary TB cases was 3063 (40.0%). There were 53 cases of tuberculosis registered among foreigners. There were 166 patients with resistance to at least one drug (3.3% of all bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB cases). TB was initial AIDS indicative disease in 27 cases. There were 810 deaths due to tuberculosis in 2008 (2.1 TB deaths per 100 000). Mortality among males--3.3--was nearly four times higher than among females--0.9.
