  • Title: Ghana 1988: results from the Demographic and Health Survey.

    Abstract:
    The Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS), conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service, is a nationally representative self-weighing sample survey. Data were collected from 4406 households and complete interviews were held with 4488 women aged 15-49, conducted between February and June, 1988. Population size increased from 7.8 million in 1965 to 10.7 million in 1980, a 37.2% rise. The crude birth rate went down 4.2% in 1980 from 47.2 million in 1965 to 45.2 million in 1980. The % of the labor force engaged in agriculture went down 8.2% in this period. The % of women who had no education in 1988 was 39.7. Women who had completed higher education in 1988 was 7.5%. The total fertility rate (TFR) in 1985-88 was estimated at 6.4. Fertility differentials, 1985-88 show a TFR of 6.6 for rural, 5.1 for urban. By educational status, women who had completed higher education had a TFR of 3.6. Age-specific fertility for age 15-19 0-4 years before the survey (1983-88) was 124 births/1000 women/year. For ages 20-24, it was 258 births/1000 women/year. For the 40-44 age group in the same years, age-specific fertility was 117. The ideal number of children by age is 4.7 for the 15-19 year-old group and 6.0 for the 40-44 year-old group. The ideal-mean number of children desired is 5.3. The 22.8% of the total number of women want no more children. 65.6% of births 12 months prior to the survey were wanted at that time. 12.9% of currently married women are using a method of contraception. The source of supply or information for current users is the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana 19.9%; field worker 1.3%, 1.3% private doctor; and 11.9% for government hospital for all methods. The % of currently married women who know the pill is 63.9%, 39.6% know the IUD. 79.4% know any method. Reasons for nonuse among exposed nonusers are lack of knowledge, 23.7%; opposed to family planning, 36.%; and costs too much, 1.9%. Current marital status is 75.6% single in the 15-49 age group, 22.6% single in the 20-24 age group; and 78.3% in the 40-44 year group. Breastfeeding takes place for 20.4 months. The % still breastfeeding after 24-35 months is 11.8 for 876 births. The infant mortality rate is estimated to be 77 in 1983-9=87. For the 45-49 age group, the mean number of children ever born is 7.25, the proportion dead, 0.22.
