Title: New limits. Author: Carlisle D. Journal: Nurs Times; ; 86(19):22-3. PubMed ID: 2342929. Abstract: Gynecological nurses have supported the changes to the abortion law as part of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill. The main change is the reduction of the limit for legal abortions from 28 weeks to 24 weeks. Reducing the time limit to lower than 24 weeks would probably lead to more women having illegal abortions. However, in cases where the woman's life is at risk or the fetus is shown to be physically handicapped, there is no limit. This change of 4 weeks is said to make no difference because in 1988 only 2% of abortions in England and Wales took place after 20 weeks and 80% took place before the 12th week. The bill has not yet been passed, but the medical profession has endorsed it overwhelmingly. The issue of stillbirths has yet to be finalized in the law. The Royal College of Midwives wants the viability of stillborn fetuses changed from 28 to 24 weeks. This will allow stillborn babies of a younger age to be registered, baptised and cremated.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
