  • Title: Topical anesthetic abuse: a case report of bilateral corneal ring infiltrates.
    Author: Rapuano CJ.
Journal: J Ophthalmic Nurs Technol; 1990; 9(3):94-5. PubMed ID: 2366253.
    Abstract:
Topical anesthetic agents, such as tetracaine and proparacaine, appear to be toxic to the corneal epithelium, but the mechanism for this toxicity is unclear. Whether the toxicity results from a direct effect of the anesthetic on the epitheluim or an impairment of the tropic action of the corneal nerve fibers, it is well-documented that the use of topical anesthetics can lead to permanent corneal scarring and decreased vision. It should be carefully explained to patients that although topical anesthetics numb the eye, more than a few drops can actually prevent healing and may lead to permanent damage.
