    Abstract:
During the period 4.1.1988-19.5.1988, a screening investigation with tympanometry was performed with the object of determining the prevalence of secretory otitis media (SOM) in hospitalized paediatric patients aged 0-6 years. A total of 357 children participated in the investigation. SOM, defined as the occurrence of a flat tympanogram (type B tympanogram) in at least one year, was found in 68% of the children examined. SOM was associated with emergency admission (p = 0.003) and age (p less than 0.001). Infants aged 0-1 year comprized 62% of the population investigated and had a prevalence of SOM of 80%. No sex difference was observed in the incidence of SOM (p = 0.12). 87% of the children were admitted as emergencies and SOM was associated with this form of admission (p = 0.003). Catarrhal symptoms were encountered in 52% of the children. SOM was associated with this (p = 0.02). SOM appears to be a condition which occurs frequently, particularly in paediatric patients aged 0-6 years admitted as emergencies. This population deserves particular interest both clinically and from the point of view of research.
