Title: Cutaneous Cryptococcus laurentii infection in an immunocompetent child. Author: Molina-Leyva A, Ruiz-Carrascosa JC, Leyva-Garcia A, Husein-Elahmed H. Journal: Int J Infect Dis; 2013 Dec; 17(12):e1232-3. PubMed ID: 23791224. Abstract: Cryptococcus laurentii is an extremely rare human pathogen. We report a case of primary cutaneous cryptococcosis caused by Cryptococcus laurentii in an immunocompetent patient, an 8-year-old child with a solitary lesion on the forearm. It was impossible to determine the source of infection and no predisposing factors were found. Oral treatment with fluconazole was totally successful. A review of the literature showed only three cases of cutaneous infection by Cryptococcus laurentii. All of the cases occurred in immunocompromised patients. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of Cryptococcus laurentii in an immunocompetent host.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
