Title: Abortion services in the United States, 1987 and 1988. Author: Henshaw SK, Van Vort J. Journal: Fam Plann Perspect; 1990; 22(3):102-8, 142. PubMed ID: 2379566. Abstract: A 1989 survey by The Alan Guttmacher Institute shows that 1.6 million abortions were performed in the United States in 1988, a number that has remained relatively unchanged since 1980. More than 98 percent of abortions in 1987-1988 were performed in metropolitan areas. Although 51 percent of metropolitan counties have no provider of abortion services, 93 percent of nonmetropolitan counties are without a provider. The lack of abortion services in nonmetropolitan areas has been intensified by a 13 percent reduction since 1985 in the number of hospitals that offer abortion services. The number of nonhospital facilities providing abortion services increased by four percent, however, and specialized clinics provided 64 percent of all abortions performed in 1988. A 1989 survey by The Alan Guttmacher Institute shows that 1.6 million abortions were done in the US in 1988, a number that is relatively unchanged since 1980. In June, 1989, questionnaires were mailed to physician's offices, hospitals, and clinics where abortions were thought to have been done. More than 98% of abortions in 1987-88 were done in metropolitan areas. 3% more abortions were performed in the 1st quarter of 1989. The number of reported abortions, by metropolitan status, rate of abortions per 1000 women aged 15-44, and ratio of abortions per 100 pregnancies ending in abortions or live births for US 1973-88 are shown in tabular form. Abortion rates vary dramatically by state of occurrence. The total number of abortions and number and % provided to nonresidents, by state, and the total number of abortions and number and % obtained out of state, by woman's state of residence, and the resident abortion rate per 1000 women 15-44, 1985, is given in tabular form. The proportion of counties that have a provider, and the proportion that have a large-scale provider (provider of 4000 or more abortions in 1988) are also given in tabular form. Although 51% of metropolitan counties have no abortion providers, 93% of nonmetropolitan counties lack a provider. The lack of abortion services in nonmetropolitan areas has been intensified by 13% reduction since 1985 in the number of hospitals that offer abortion services. The number of nonhospital facilities increased by 4%, however. Specialized clinics provided 64% of all abortions performed in 1988. Hospitals tend to do few abortions; most abortions are done in specialized clinics. Doctor's offices make up 25% of the abortion providers, but reported only 4% of all abortions.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
