Title: Stasis ulcers: update on a common geriatric problem. Author: Fitzpatrick JE. Journal: Geriatrics; 1989 Oct; 44(10):19-21, 25-6, 31. PubMed ID: 2676731. Abstract: The impact of chronic venous insufficiency on the activity and well-being of the elderly patient can be devastating. Acute complications such as cellulitis and venous ulcers often require extended hospitalization at a great cost to both patient and society. However, it is the long-term loss of ambulation that has the most profound effect on the elderly. It is clear that despite hundreds of medical papers the optimal management still has not been delineated. In general, early intervention to improve the hemodynamics before irreversible damage occurs is most beneficial. It is the responsibility of the geriatric practitioner to remain abreast of new treatments in the management of this disorder.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
