    Abstract:
    Ninety-nine patients with neuromuscular scolioses treated by segmental spinal instrumentation (SSI) between 1978 and 1983 are presented. All patients were followed-up for an average of 7.2 (5.3-9.8) years after the operation. The average correction achieved was from 78 degrees to 31 degrees for scoliotic deformities and from 62 degrees to 42 degrees for sagittal deformities. The causes and management of major complications are discussed. Special surgical techniques for fixation of the lumbosacral junction are described, and the latest advances in the SSI system, such as the application of hooks, screws and alignment devices, are presented.
