Title: [Characteristics of the lipid composition of erythrocyte membranes in patients with diabetes mellitus]. Author: Maksimova OV, Solun MN. Journal: Probl Endokrinol (Mosk); 1989; 35(2):14-8. PubMed ID: 2740308. Abstract: A total of 50 patients aged 17 to 39 with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (DM) were investigated. The following changes in the level and composition of erythrocytic membrane and plasma lipids were detected: an increase in the level of erythrocytes (ER) of total lipids (TL), disorder of the composition of neutral lipids (an increase in the level of total cholesterol--TC and a decrease in the amount of free fatty acids), and a decrease in the level of total phospholipids (PL). The amount of plasma TL, TC and PL was increased. These changes were most noticeable at the stage of carbohydrate metabolic decompensation with disease duration of 5 yrs and were accompanied by a rise of the TC/PL index. According to the literature data the above changes in the erythrocytic membrane lipid composition lead to an increase in ER microviscosity and a decrease in ER deformability, being one of the mechanisms of the development of microangiopathies in DM.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
