    Abstract:
    A questionnaire sent to 72 ophthalmologists and 74 general practitioners or internists revealed that in Switzerland probably no more than one-half of all diabetic patients are regularly seen by an ophthalmologist. The mean frequency of ophthalmological check-ups varies between about one year in patients with no fundus changes and six months in patients with background retinopathy. All diabetic patients should be screened regularly with a view to early laser treatment in proliferative stages.
