    Abstract:
    In separate essays, Engelhardt and Jennings discuss the problem of bioethical discourse in a pluralistic society where there is profound disagreement over the morality of abortion, euthanasia, embryo research, and other issues. Engelhardt argues that in the post-modern world where pluralism and relativism are sociocultural realities, moral strangers (persons who do not share a common moral vision) must rely upon mutual respect (the "nonuse of others without their permission") in the process of negotiating resolutions to moral dilemmas. Jennings juxtaposes the "bioethics of the human and public good" and the "bioethics of the right," with its emphasis on protection of individual choice and liberty. He identifies the mission of bioethics to be to promote and nurture a "deeper, more thoughtful public discourse about substantive questions of the good life and the good society," a discourse that is essential in a pluralistic society.
