  • Title: Mercedes Flap With Releasing Incisions for Scalp Defects.
    Author: Russo F.
Journal: Ann Plast Surg; 2017 Aug; 79(2):149-155. PubMed ID: 28328636.
    Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: The reconstruction of scalp defects is surgically challenging due to the limited distensibility in the area. OBJECTIVES: To describe a new variant of the Mercedes flap with releasing incisions for the reconstruction of medium-sized scalp defects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pigs' feet were used as the experimental model for the design of this new variant. Different designs were created, and the best result was achieved by measuring the tension of the edges using tensiometers. Later, this design was applied to 3 patients with medium-sized scalp defects. RESULTS: The 3 patients achieved complete closure of their scalp defects with this new flap variant in a single quick and simple operation. There were no complications, and the final aesthetic result was excellent. CONCLUSIONS: The Mercedes flap with releasing incisions is a good alternative for the closure of medium-sized scalp defects.
