  • Title: [Functional state of the hypophyseo-adrenal system in patients with chronic alcoholism and various degrees of liver damage].
Author: Borodulin VG, Zubovskiĭ GA, Avdienko VN.
Journal: Zh Nevropatol Psikhiatr Im S S Korsakova; 1988; 88(9):118-21. PubMed ID: 2852883.
    Abstract:
Chronic alcohol poisoning causes functional discoordination of the pituitary-adrenal complex expressed in suppression of the steroidogenesis of the adrenal cortex and in pituitary hyperproduction of ACTH. There is an interrelationship between the functional activity of the adrenal cortex and the severity of alcoholic involvement of the liver and between the intactness of pituitary function and the liver status. Antialcoholic treatment in conditions of complete alcohol abstinence leads to the normalization of ACTH levels in the peripheral blood whereas the steroidogenesis fails to be fully recovered.
