Title: [Oral contraceptives and the periodontium]. Author: Fesseler A. Journal: Zahnarztl Mitt; 1979 May 16; 69(10):634. PubMed ID: 289261. Abstract: The effects of combination and sequential oral contraceptive (OC) use on the periodontium are discussed. OCs are believed to cause or aggravate gingivitis, gingivahyperplasia, and epithelial changes. This could be due to a decrease in periodontal resistance, with OCs acting as a co-destruction factor. This could for example cause a case of chronic gingivitis to develop into periodontitis. Little definitive clinical evidence of such a relationship has been found, however. No studies on the periodontal effects of low-dose gestagen preparations have been undertaken.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
