Abstract: A broad spectrum of gastrointestinal pathogens can cause diarrhea in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). A systematic approach utilizing symptomatology and the appropriate diagnostic tests will maximize the clinician's chance of identifying the specific pathogens. Enteric infections in AIDS patients are often incurable and require prolonged therapy and chronic suppression.
