Title: New retinoids for dermatologic diseases. Uses and toxicity. Author: Lowe NJ, David M. Journal: Dermatol Clin; 1988 Oct; 6(4):539-52. PubMed ID: 2976328. Abstract: Systemic administration of retinoids is frequently associated with mucocutaneous side effects, liver toxicity, and abnormalities of the serum lipid profile. Currently, the main factors limiting more common use of retinoids are their teratogenicity and chronic bone toxicity. Treatment with retinoids requires appropriate selection of patients, careful periodic monitoring of the clinical response, and appropriate laboratory tests.
