  • Title: [Entomophthoromycosis. Review].
    Author: Bittencourt AL.
Journal: Med Cutan Ibero Lat Am; 1988; 16(2):93-100. PubMed ID: 3050338.
    Abstract:
A review of the published reports on entomophthoromycosis (rhynoentomophthoromycosis and basidiobolomycosis) is presented. Geographic distribution, clinical, pathologic, mycologic and therapeutic aspects are emphasized. Primary and secondary visceral involvement are discussed. Data concerning 33 Latin American cases are analysed: 21 cases of rhynoentomophthoromycosis and 11 of basidiobolomycosis. Of these cases, 84% were described in Brazil and of the seven reported cases with primary visceral involvement reported in the world literature six were from Brazil. The importance of an early diagnosis of these infections is asserted specially in view of the resulting deformities and even death.
