    Abstract:
The technology of fertility control has made dramatic strides in the past 25 years, offering a wider variety of safe, effective contraceptive choices than ever before. Lower dose oral contraceptives, new barrier techniques, and improved IUDs have been important recent advances, and new methods of hormonal delivery offer promise for the future. However, the search for safer, more effective, and more convenient contraceptive options must continue as a high research priority. In the past 25 years, there have been important advances in the development of contraceptives. Although there have been no changes in the chemical composition of contraceptives, advances in the formulation, safety, patient acceptance and the convenience of contraceptive methods have occurred. Today, over 33 million American couples use some type of contraception. One of the most important steps in assessing an individual's or a couple's contraceptive needs is a review of the patient's medical history and a physical exam. Another important factor in contraceptive counseling is an objective and accurate reporting of facts without alterations due to moral or ethical beliefs. Of crucial importance to both the patient and the doctor are the factors of safety and effectiveness. With these factors in mind, in addition to the risks, contraindications and noncontraceptive benefits of a method, the framework for a review of currently available contraceptive methods is set up. Improvements in oral contraceptives, steroid injections, the introduction of RU486 and improved ovulation detection and prediction have provided hope for the future of contraceptives.
