  • Title: New seasonal distribution of births in New South Wales.
    Author: Parker G.
    Journal: Med J Aust; 1979 Oct 20; 2(8):424. PubMed ID: 318479.
    Abstract:
Seasonal variations in births in New South Wales are not apparent from 1962 to 1976. The pattern of birth distributions indicates that over the 14 year period, the maximum number of births have occurred in 5 different months (May, March, September, October, and December) and in 7 different months when correction is made for months of varying lengths. Birth registration has varied over the years with varying government incentives for prompt registration. A seasonal shift is noted comparing registration over the 1905-1961 period with 1962-1976 period. Another author has suggested an optimal temperature for conception in New South Wales, 18 degrees Centigrade, with conception being inhibited at extreme temperatures. Since fertility patterns have varied but the climate has not changed since 1971, another author has suggested that the selenium-status of soils may be influencing the patterns. Implications are that given a varying birth rate over time, study and control groups should be matched by year of birth as well as by region of birth.
