    Abstract:
In 1986 the community-based health services in the West Suffolk Health District were reorganized into 6 geographical sectors, each with a community manager; and in June 1986 an AIDS task force was established under the District Medical Director. Key staff from the health authority, the education authority, the social services department, and the health committees of the district councils were designated to work on AIDS prevention programs and AIDS education. The educational work was designed to diffuse information through community leaders and professionals to the lay public. A series of 5 seminars were set up for professionals from social service, education, voluntary, and other agencies. Speakers included a physician, a consultant in genitourinary medicine, and a representative from the Terence Higgins Trust -- a charitable body set up to help people with AIDS. Workshops were then organized for health workers, educators, clergymen, police, trade union representatives, hairdressers, and other personnel who deal with large numbers of people. A central counseling service for AIDS was set up in the district's genitourinary clinic and includes AIDS support groups and telephone numbers for people to call when in need of AIDS counseling. Two members of the homosexual or bisexual community are to be trained as AIDS educators, and the staff of the district's drug advisory service have been trained in AIDS counseling for intravenous drug users. A leaflet for sexually active young people, called "Straight Talk about Safe Sex," has been produced.
