  • Title: Growth and nutrition of Zambian children.
    Author: Voorhoeve HW.
Journal: Cent Afr J Med; 1985 Nov; 31(11):224-7. PubMed ID: 3830401.
    Abstract:
This article is a short report based on a pediatric consultantship carried out by the author, consisting of visiting 10 Dutch doctors in 5 rural hospitals in the western province of Zambia. The survey also included 10 mobile and hospital-based maternal-child health centers. The mean weight for age of nearly 200 children up to 2 years is around the underline or 3rd percentile of the international standard of the "road to health record." After the age of 2 there is remarkable catch-up growth. Anthropomorphic measurements performed on about 600 Zambian children under the age of 5 examined their nutritional state, finding that just 3/4 (76.7%) are in a good nutritional state and that around 7% are undernourished, with a mid-arm circumference of 12.5 cm or less. Within the Western Province the undernourishment in the Sichili area is even higher (9%) and on the west bank of the Senange district just 4.3%. This last figure is mentioned by the medical author, M.H.King, as the African average for undernutrition. The Sesheke district showed a 9% prevalence of seriously malnourished children.
