Title: Immunization coverage increased in Suriname. Journal: Bull Pan Am Health Organ; 1985; 19(1):101-2. PubMed ID: 3875379. Abstract: The coverage of Suriname children under 1 year of age with 3 doses of DPT and poliomyelitis vaccines increased from 54% in 1982 to 85% in 1983. This advance was a result of concerted efforts by Suriname's Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) coupled with new legislation that requires all children to be fully vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, and poliomyelitis before their 1st birthday. Children are not permitted to attend nursery or primary school without a vaccination certificate, and penalties or fines may be imposed on parents who do not comply with the legislation. In 1983, the vaccination drop-out rate ranged from 1-66% in different regions of the country, with a national average of 25%. To reduce the incidence of incomplete vaccination, some health centers contact parents who do not bring their children back for the 2nd or 3rd vaccine dose or arrange home visits to innoculate these children. A new target is to increase measles vaccination coverage among children 1-4 years of age from its current level of 55%.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
