Title: The MD and the DRG. Author: Morreim EH. Journal: Hastings Cent Rep; 1985 Jun; 15(3):30-8. PubMed ID: 3926718. Abstract: Cost containment in health care poses enormous challenges to traditional medical values. Morreim considers the effect on physicians of the federal government's Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG) prospective reimbursement plan for Medicare. She rejects as morally objectionable three models of the physician hospital relationship: (1) hospital restrictions on physicians' treatment decisions, (2) sharing of profits and losses, and (3) ad hoc, bedside budget balancing decisions by physicians. Instead, Morreim proposes an approach under which physicians would collectively systematize the informal protocols that guide clinical decision making so as to foster economic efficiency without detracting from the quality of care.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
