    Abstract:
    Eighty patients with severe and widespread psoriasis who had not responded to treatment at the Dermatology Outpatient Department were referred for specialized therapy to the Johannesburg Hospital Psoriasis Clinic. Here treatment consisted of phototherapy (topical coal tar or dithranol plus ultraviolet light (UVL], psoralen and ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy or chemotherapy with methotrexate or etretinate (Tigason; Roche). The best results were obtained with etretinate, either given alone or together with UVL (midrange sunbeam spectrum) or PUVA. Most patients required the use of two or more treatment regimens for successful control.
