    An overview is provided of public health and ethical issues posed by acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Experiences in San Francisco are often cited as illustrations. Topics discussed include the sensitivity of health education about sexual practices; confidentiality; the patient's right to know the results of blood tests for antibodies related to AIDS; and the pros and cons of closing, as a public health measure, bathhouses frequented by homosexuals.
