  • Title: [Effect of TRH on plasma levels of LH, estrogen, and progestin following LH release: in relation to luteinization during the early luteal phase (author's transl)].

    Abstract:
The effect of TRH, following luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) injection, on the pituitary-gonadal system in relation to LH release and plasma levels of ovarian hormones was investigated. 100 mcg LH-RH was injected 2-5 days after ovulation in 5 normal menstruating baboons. Blood samples were collected every 15 minutes during the 1st hour and every 30 minutes for the next 2 hours. Samples were assayed for LH, estrogen, and progestin. A plasma LH peak appeared within 30 minutes. An additional LH peak occurred 90-150 minutes after LH-RH injection. Estrogen and progestin levels were elevated 30-45 minutes after injection. In the next early luteal phase of these baboons, 40 mcg TRH following 100 mcg of LH-RH, injected twice at 30-minute intervals, caused increments of progestin but had no effect on plasma LH and estrogen. It is suggested that TRH may be involved in the regulation of luteinization. A further study in 3 baboons, in which 40 mcg TRH was administered every day for 4 days from the day after ovulation to menstruation, showed increments of progestin. This experiment infers that TRH given in the early luteal phase of the cycle in the baboon may have a luteotropic action.
