Title: [Protein constituents of the cervix mucus]. Author: Masson PL, Ferin J. Journal: Gynecol Obstet (Paris); 1969; 68(5):419-32. PubMed ID: 4188998. Abstract: Cervical mucus is composed of a network of mucinous filaments in a solution of proteins, predominantly serum proteins. Plasma cells infiltrating the cervical mucosa produce immunoglobulins. The bacteriolytic and bacteriostatic actions of lysozyme and lactoferrin (produced by the neutrophil leucocytes) complement the immunological defense mechanisms. The most likely explanation of the cyclical changes in cercical mucus consistency is the theory that hormone action changes the proportion of mucins produced, altering the balance between mucins and soluble proteins.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
