Title: [Morphological and clinical liver changes after taking oral contraceptives]. Author: Mölleken K, Stahl E, Bretzke G. Journal: Z Gesamte Inn Med; 1979 Jan 15; 34(2):79-81. PubMed ID: 425584. Abstract: In 155 women of the age group 16-45 years after intake of oral contraceptives in 68.4% (106 cases) histologically provable liver changes were found. Sinusoidal ectasias of different size and drug-conditioned hepatitides most frequently occurred. An isolated intrahepatic cholestase only rarely existed. Increases of transaminase are the most frequent reference to a lesion of the liver parenchyma after intake of oral contraceptives. The author adopts a definite attitude to the differential diagnosis and its difficulties between a drug-conditioned hepatitis and the usual virus hepatitis. Liver biopsies of 155 oral contraceptives users (ages 16-45) showed that 106 (68.4%) had histologically observable hepatic damage. Sinusoidal ectasia was observed in 73 cases. 53 women had transaminase levels between 50 and 100 E/1, 34 over 100 E/1; such elevated transaminase levels often indicate lesions of the hepatic parenchyma. In 20 cases evidence of hepatitis was found, but it could not be determined whether it was viral in nature or caused by medication use. 5 cases of intrahepatic cholestasis were observed.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
