Abstract: Thromboembolism is the leading preventable cause of death in the hospitalized patient. It is not well managed by the application of current diagnostic and treatment techniques. Prevention should be the major clinical emphasis. Low-dose heparin is a safe and effective method of prophylaxis for postoperative venous thromboembolism. Its administration is simple and requires minimal monitoring.
