  • Title: Sperm antibodies and their action upon human spermatozoa.
    Author: Rumke P.
Journal: Ann Inst Pasteur (Paris); 1970 Apr; 118(4):525-8. PubMed ID: 4316129.
    Abstract:
Sperm antibodies and their action upon human spermatozoa are discussed. Some infertile men possess autoantibodies against spermatozoa in seminal plasma and blood stream. These autoantibodies agglutinate and sometimes immobilize spermatozoa. Kibrick et al. found 67 positive cases in 2015 sera of infertile males using a macroscopic agglutination technique. Some patients have strong autoagglutination with low serum titers. Generally serum titers are higher than seminal plasma titers, corresponding to higher IgG and IgA levels of serum. The majority of the sera agglutinate the test spermatozoa with their tails; only a few show head agglutination and mixed types exist. Often normal sperm counts are found in patients with spermagglutinins in serum and seminal plasma. Testis biopsies often reveal normal histology. Spermagglutins were found especially in cases of obstroction of the efferent ducts. The correlation of sperm agglutinin formastion and pathological resorption has been proven by Dr. R. van Dam. Patients have been treated with long-acting testosterone by the author and by Schoysman: 5 of Schoysman's 17 male patients became fertile but none of the patients of the author showed significant decrease in agglutination titers in serum or in seminal plasma.
