    Journal: Int J Fertil; 1974; 19(2):85-8. PubMed ID: 4370854.
    Abstract:
A study was undertaken to determine the amounts of certain trace elements in the normal endosalpinx and their possible variation in the normal menstrual cycle. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was used to estimate the levels of copper, zinc, manganese, and potassium in 23 oviduct specimens which were divided into 4 groups according to the phase of the cycle: 1) early proliferative (EP), Cycle Days 6-10; 2) late proliferative (LP), Cycle Days 11-14; 3) early secretory (ESY, Cycle Days 16-22; and 4) late secretory (LS), Cycle Days 23-28. A biopsy was taken from the mucosa of the intramural part, isthmus, and ampulla in each tube. Findings indicated no differences in copper, manganese, and potassium concentrations among the different parts of the tube in each phase of the cycle. The zinc concentration was lower (p less than .05) in the ampulla (36.9 mcg/gm dry weight) than in the isthmus (57.4) and intramural part (69) in EP, but not in the other 3 phases. In the 4 phases of the menstrual cycle there was no significant difference between the levels of zinc and manganese, whereas the potassium concentration was highest in ES (p less than .05) and the copper concentration was highest in LS (p less than .05).
