    Abstract:
    Some of the drugs that tend to cause mental depression are antihypertensive drugs, ACTH and cortisone, and oral contraceptives (OCs). OCs containing progestogen-estrogen cause depression on occasion. Various mechanisms have been invoked to explain this contraceptive hormone induced depression. Although interference with tryptophan metabolism has been advanced, depression seems to be consequent to the accelerated monoamine resulting in its decreased availability at the synaptic level. Baumblatt and Winston recommended pyridoxine 50 mg daily to overcome psychiatric effects.
