Title: Urinary oestrone and chorionic gonadotrophin in threatened abortion. Author: Jarvilehto U, Saastamoinen J, Hirvonen E. Journal: Ann Chir Gynaecol Fenn; 1974; 63(6):445-50. PubMed ID: 4441024. Abstract: The relationship between urinary estrone and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) excretion and the prognosis in pregnancies complicated by threatened abortions was analyzed in 332 patients from 1968-1970 in Helsinki. 203 cases ended in delivery and 129 in abortion. 47% of the abortions occurred within or before the 12th week of gestation, 37% in the 13th-19th week and 16% in the 20th week. The median daily excretion of estrone was not less than 30 mcg in the patients with good prognoses while those with poor prognoses had a daily estrone output of 30 mcg. The difference between estrone values in the 2 groups (deliveries and abortions) was highly significant (p less than .001). By the 9th-12th week of gestation, those with good prognoses had a median HCG value above 1000 units. 27.5% of these threatened abortions pregnancies delivered before the 37th week compared with 9% in the control group, and the frequency of babies with a birth weight of less than 2500 gm was 9% in this series and 4.5% in the control group (p less than .001). The Apgar score noted no marked difference between the treated group and the control group.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
