  • Title: [Hormonal contraception and blood coagulation disorders].
    Author: Schander K, Plotz EJ.
Journal: Med Klin; 1974 Feb 15; 69(7):265-71. PubMed ID: 4596111.
    Abstract:
Epidemiological and clinical studies on the possible relationships between oral contraceptives and blood coagulation disorders are reviewed. Although a "hypercoagulability" has been observed in women treated with oral contraceptives, epidemiological data suggest that this is not necessarily a risk of thrombosis. Effects of estrogens on blood vessel walls and on hemodynamic values have also been studied, but definitive conclusions about the significance of these findings have not yet been achieved. Caution is recommended, however, in prescribing oral contraceptives to women with histories of thrombosis, embolism, cerebral circulatory disorders, or blood diseases.
