  • Title: The role of artificial insemination in the management of infertility.
    Author: Ladipo OA.
Journal: East Afr Med J; 1979 May; 56(5):219-22. PubMed ID: 467291.
    Abstract:
In Africa, a couple's infertility is cause for emotional and psychological stress, therefore, artificial insemination should be considered in selected cases of infertility due to a male factor. Of 45 infertile couples whose infertility ranged from 2 to 15 years, 35 were treated using AIH (homologous semen) and 10 using AID (donor semen). The semen samples were analyzed for sperm density, motility, and morphology then artificial insemination was perfomred within 3-1/2 hours after collection. There were 14 pregnancies with an AID conception rate of 80% and AIH rate of 17.1%. Spontaneous abortions occurred in 6 patients within 15 weeks. Although AIH in oligospermia is unsatisfactory there is hope that the husband's sperm mixed with a donor's semen will help achieve conception and nullify any moral or religious objections to artificial insemination. AID, however, gives a better prognosis for men with severe oligospermia and azoospermia.
