Title: [Effect of oral steroid contraceptives on fibroadenoma of the breast]. Author: Prechtel K, Seidel H. Journal: Dtsch Med Wochenschr; 1973 Apr 06; 98(14):698-702. PubMed ID: 4695395. Abstract: Biopsies were taken from 790 randomly selected women of childbearing age of whom 233 had been taking oral contraceptives. Fibroadenomas were found in 61 of 233 women taking contraceptives and in 152 of 557 untreated women, a similar incidence. It was concluded that 1) the incidence of fibroadenoma is no greater in women on oral contraceptives than in untreated women; 2) fibroadenoma with marked intracanalicular epithelial proliferation is slightly more common in women taking contraceptives, but fibroadenoma without much intracanalicular epithelial proliferation is significantly less frequent; 3) in women with evidence of hormonal ovarian insufficiency, fibroadenoma is less common if they have been taking contraceptives for a long time; and 4) any shift in frequency distribution due to contraceptive treatment is observed after 1 year of medication, without further significant change after 2 or more years.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
