  • Title: [Effect of medroxyprogesterone on plasma somatotropin (GH) levels in 14 patients with acromegaly].

    Abstract:
    14 acromegalic patients, 8 women and 6 men, were treated with intramuscular injections of 100 mg per day of medroxyprogesterone acetate for 8 days and, for a period of at least 3 months, with oral administration of 40 mg per day. Plasma growth hormone levels were measured by the radioimmunological method after arginine infusions and after glucose tolerance test. There was a complete lack of positive response in the first group of patients treated, 4 men and 3 women with major dysmorphic problems. In the second group treated, including 2 men and 4 women with lesser dysmorphic problems, the response was extremely inconstant. It must be inferred that medroxyprogesterone acetate may act only on the less evolved stages of the disease, and that oral and intramuscular administration yield the same results.
